Finding the Source of the Stream Folly and Limb Trimming
June 19, 2008
Today’s agenda included a hike with Edie and the boys and trimming Dwarf Mistletoe limbs from one of the trees close to the camper.
The hike was based on finding the source spring for the creek. The boys have named it “Folly” after a stream in the book they are reading: “Little Grey Men“. Along the creek they named places like: Mossrock, Gnomes Picnic Place and Midwater Island. We did find the source in the west meadow and walked back to the camper to trim the tree. It is just a little ephemeral spring.
I was hoping to reach all the branches with the mistletoe, but a couple were out of reach for me. I really don’t want to have to cut that tree down. We need to get the limbs down because Dwarf Mistletoe seed is dispersed around August and September. The seeds can shoot out at 60 mph! It’s sticky too, so it will just attach to a ponderosa pine and take root.

What does Dwarf Mistletoe look like?

Dwarf Mistletoe is pale green and scaly. It looks like juniper, but it is a flowering plant. I’ll get some good pictures on Sunday or Monday.

The mistletoe is also very low to the ground so dwarves can smoochy under it at Christmas, right?
